Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
